TOP PLAYERS

MOST LIKELY TO WIN THE GOLDEN BOOT

1. CRISTIANO RONALDO
CLUB : REAL MADRID
WORLD CUPS: 2

It is too easy , like a bewildered opponent, to become fixated on Ronaldo's  trademark half-hitch kick step over. He can dribble like a demon, taking defences apart by running at their flanks. But he also strikes the ball beautifully, whether volley or dead ball. He heads with a great power. He crosses exquistely. He has great upper body strength.

2. LIONEL MESSI
CLUB: BARCELONA
WORLD CUPS: 2

The idea that Argentina might fail to reach the knockout stages in Brazil is close to unthinkable. But how much further they progress may well hinge on two questions regarding Lionel Messi: will he be fit? willhe be in form? Either first(4 times)  or runner up in each of the last 7 world player of the year awards.

3. NEYMAR JR.
CLUB: BARCELONA
WORLD CUPS: 0

When Neymar signed for Barcelona last summer, Neymar was following in the footsteps of three great Brazilian strikers who had gone before him: Romario, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. The young man knows he was a lot to do to achieve what those three enjoyed, but so far he was put hardly put a foot wrong. His outstanding perfomance in 2013 Confederations Cup is ever remembered by his fans. He is already recognized as one of the best players in the planet.

4. PEDRO

CLUB: BARCELONA
WORLD CUPS: 1

For all attributes , the one thing Spain lacks is a natural goal scorer. Is Pedro the answer? You'd think not. He didn't score at the last World Cup, and he didn't score at the 2012 Euros either. He is more of a provider. In a three-man attack, as Spain are likely to line up, his place would be on the right, from where he will score goals, but not in the way someone like Emilio Butraguneo used to.

5. HIGUAIN

CLUB: NAPOLI
WORLD CUPS:1

There are many adjectives that you might  apply to Napoli center forward Higuain - 'decisive', 'determined', and 'deadly' are the three that spring to mind - but the most important is 'profilic'. Only his River Plate record- when he was a teenager- shows a strike rate below a goal every second on game. His stats for Real Madrid are a remarkable 107 goals and 45 assists in 190 league appearances - and that includes two thin years as an emerging Under 21. Higuain's contribution may be the key for for Argentina.
