The importance of attendance

The Importance of Attendance

One of the most important thing a student can do to achieve academic success is  going to school every day.It is also the basic habit that one should achieve  In fact, research has shown that a student's attendance record may be the biggest factor influencing his/her academic success. You can never become a good participant if you are absent. By absenteeism we mean not only taking frequent leaves.

There are four types of absentees:

1. Those who take frequent leaves.
2. Those who come late or leave early.
3. Those who take frequent breaks from work or class.
4. Those who are physically present but mentally absent.

How to achieve good attendance?

*Try to get between 6-8 hours of sleep every night.
*Avoid afternoon naps. (If you feel very tired, take half an hour nap)
*Keep all the things ready for the next day.
*Always try to reach the desired venue 15 minutes early.
*Complete home works, projects, assignments on time and don't wait for the last moment.
*Develop natural interest in going to school. Don't consider it as a ritual.

Benefits of good attendance:

*People with good attendance do not miss any opportunity
*Good attendance at school is vital for pupils to achieve their full educational potential.
*Students with good attendance records generally achieve higher grades and enjoy school more.
What constitutes good attendance?

Attendance percentages are not like examination results: an attendance percentage needs to be in the high nineties before it can be considered good.
 Consider the following examples:-
An attendance record of 90% might seem good but is equal to 1 day missed per fortnight. If this continues from Years 7 to 11, a total of six month’s education will be lost.
An attendance record of 80% might seem acceptable but is equal to 1 day missed per week. If this continues from Years 7 to 11, a total of one year’s education will be lost.

In order for an attendance record to be deemed good it must be 96% or above:-
100% = excellent attendance
98% = very good attendance
